The PSP sponsored a new springtime event on Bolivar – The Watermelon Crawl. The Watermelon Crawl is a fun-filled day of decorated jeeps and golf carts, dressed up participants, parades down the beach to hot spots in town, watermelon themed challenges, winners, prizes, and so much more. Participants gathered at Tiki Beach Bar & Grill on Saturday morning to receive their t-shirt, rules packet and their first challenge…a Baby Watermelon to care for throughout the day. If the participants arrived at each location with an unharmed Baby Watermelon, they would receive a watermelon seed. The most watermelon seeds at the end of the Watermelon Crawl wins.
Tiki welcomed the crawlers with a fruit salad spread flowing around an impressively carved watermelon, with bloody marys to wash it down. Leaving around noon, the parade of watermelon crawlers traveled down the beach to the first stop, Jose’s Restaurant. At Jose’s, challengers brushed up on their beer pong skills to earn more watermelon seeds as they enjoyed Jose’s signature margaritas. After Jose’s, crawlers paraded down the beach to The Gulf Range Family Saloon where they played corn hole to receive various amounts of watermelon seeds. While at the Gulf Range they feasted on jello shots, cold beer, and chili dogs.
And once again they paraded down the beach to the final stop, Stingaree Down Under. The final challenge was to spit watermelon seeds the greatest distance into the intracoastal, earning prize seeds for the longest spitter. Contestants took advantage of the strong southerly winds to launch their seed into the intracoastal canal. After all the seeds were released, door prizes were awarded to lucky ticket holders. Then prizes were awarded for Best Decorated Vehicles, Best Costumes, King and Queen Watermelon, and the highly coveted Peoples Choice. And the winners are…
