BBQ, Crabs, and Family

By Georgia Osten
What would July be without the Annual Family Get Together? Kids from 4 to 68! Washers in the yard, a little football, frisbee, where’s a soccer ball? A lot of drinkin’ and hootin’ and hollerin’…after a week of beach play time, the Louisiana/Texas family vacation had finally come to an end, and it was our pleasure to host the final dinner under the house with the cool breezes blowing. So PawPaw didn’t have to do ALL the cooking, this year’s event was catered by FantaSea BBQ in Gilchrist. Oh my goodness, mouth watering brisket, the juiciest bar-b-que chicken and spicy pork ribs, onions and pickles! What a treat, Thanks FantaSea!

My niece made me swear we’d have crabs, so since we never do a cookout without crabs, off I go to do my crabbing – at Joe’s of course! The biggest “full moon” crabs you’ve ever seen. My brother-in-law made the Louisiana potato salad, I made the baked beans and my sister-in-law prepared a huge caesar salad. Any live music you ask? Well, glad you asked …

GO_0715A few members of our family work for Cobb Real Estate, as do our friends Robin and Martin Melancon. Not too backwards about coming forwards, my boldest sister-in-law asked Martin to come over to serenade us. Martin is a Crystal Beach icon, singer/song-writer extraordinaire. His tunes are mesmerizing, carrying you away. Lisa’s banana pudding also carried us away, prepared the night before, those vanilla wafers soaked up all the goodness, and my goodness even the chocolate cake disappeared.

After everyone left except for our house guests, who actually stayed in their 36 foot long RV parked in the driveway, a leisurely evening was spent topped off with some Limoncello and Single Malt Scotch. Needless to say – sweet dreams were had by all. See y’all next year Dear Family …

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
