Bolivar Peninsula Chamber of Commerce hosted a meeting with officials from Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Texas General Land Office (GLO) and Galveston County on Monday to discuss various issues relating to highway projects and beach improvements on Bolivar. Highlights of the meeting include:
TxDOT
- Loop 108 bridge replacement to be completed by early November
- funding approved and engineering studies underway to extend the seaward barriers along highway 87
- planning stage begun for highway safety lighting from Gilchrist to Highway 124
- highway 87 ditch drainage improvements hampered because TxDOT does not own outfall drainage easements
- long term Highway 87 improvement plan ready for public review in Spring 2025
GLO
- adopted emergency rules to enable County to expedite beachfront construction and dune protection permitting process without requiring GLO review (click here)
- funding provided for beach nourishment to extend beach 4 miles x 200′ wide westward from the county line toward Gilchrist, to begin mid-year 2025
- Rollover fishing pier construction to begin before the end of 2024, completion in 12-18 months
