Galveston County Unveils Strategic Plan for Bolivar Peninsula
At a recent Bolivar Peninsula Readiness and Hazard Mitigation Meeting, the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management (GCOEM) unveiled strategic initiatives aimed at boosting community preparedness and resilience in response to natural hazards. Led by Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Jesse Ryholt, the GCOEM emphasized the importance of community collaboration and detailed several action plans.
One immediate goal is to host a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training course specifically tailored for the Bolivar Peninsula. This program seeks to equip residents with practical emergency response skills, fostering a safer and more prepared community. The CERT training will require strong participation from the local population to make the best use of the resources dedicated to this initiative. By focusing on hands-on training, GCOEM intends to empower residents, making them active participants in their own preparedness.
Additionally, GCOEM proposed the establishment of a volunteer Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) position to further bolster community readiness. This role would involve assisting with ongoing and future mitigation efforts on the peninsula. According to Ryholt, this volunteer position will be advertised locally through social media, community organizations, and word-of-mouth to attract candidates who are committed to supporting their community.
Looking toward the long term, GCOEM has committed to securing grant funding to sustain these preparedness and mitigation projects. Grants would provide the necessary financial backing for future initiatives, helping to ensure that the Bolivar Peninsula remains proactive in the face of potential hazards. The GCOEM team encourages community members to provide detailed input on specific support areas to enhance engagement and alignment with local needs.
Community outreach emerged as both a short-term and long-term focus during the meeting. GCOEM stressed that ongoing investment in outreach and educational efforts will help build stronger community bonds, improve morale, and potentially influence beneficial policy adjustments in the Bolivar Peninsula area. By prioritizing public engagement, GCOEM aims to foster a resilient community capable of navigating future challenges.
Ryholt concluded the meeting with a call to action, urging residents to stay engaged and share their ideas to keep preparedness efforts moving forward. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of shared responsibility between GCOEM and the Bolivar Peninsula community in building a safer, well-prepared region.

Bravo! I am glad this is being reviewed and plans in place. I served on a CERT team and enjoyed the training. My husband and I will be on the lookout for updates on this initiative and how we can be involved.
